I've experience w PS and Illustrator.

um i can tell you.
what i do:
1.make shape layer all over the edges where you want to put gradient
2. make second shape layer and put it to opacity (25-70)
3.rasterize 1st layer shape(but i always duplicate layer before i rasterize it)
4.and finally, select it with magic tool, use normal round brushes and go over the layer as you wish..it's simple, dont you think?

Yes, you do deserve praising on it. A very good line art is an excellent start for a neat vector! And... yeah, it might work as artistic nude, there are some nipples at the Tenjou Tenge gallery that didn't get deleted (XD artistic nipples).
Good luck with college, doesn't matter how long it takes, message me when you're done with it.
